We had the opportunity to catch up with Sarah our Queensland Geo Organiser and had the chance to get to know her, how she is involved in the industry and what WomANZ means to her.
Tell us a little about yourself. Who are you, what motivates you and what is your favorite food/beverage?
Sarah: Hi! I am SarahDerr you can call me Sare, Derr or Sarah. I am a part-time streamer and full-time cat mumma, who loves first-person shooters and invests a lot of time in a small succulent garden. I am motivated by the idea of helping others, there is something about seeing someone else achieve great things knowing that you helped motivate or influence them.
My Favorite food to eat is Korean BBQ and my Favorite drink is a peach bubble tea with rainbow jellies.
How are you involved in gaming/esports/content creation?
I am currently involved in the gaming and content creation through my casual Twitch stream and also online PVP.
I love multiplayer games! It is such a great way to meet new people with similar interests. I have met some of my best mates through online gaming.
How did you get into gaming/esports/content creation? How did it all start for you?
How did it all start for me…. Age of Empires from the cereal box, isn’t that how it started for everyone? I joke! Though I would have to say I have always been into the classics Pokemon was my childhood and Nintendo consumed my life! Trying to take the perfect photo of Sandslash on Pokemon snap and nail the 1,400 points. Well anyways that was my life up until about 2010 when Black Ops was released, and I have been a first-person shooter kind of girl ever since.
What advice would you have for people looking to get into a position like yours? Do you have any words of encouragement?
You do you! Believe in yourself, don’t over think or be too serious it’s all about having fun because if you’re not having fun what’s the damn point. and always be the you that you are!
What do you think the landscape is like now for women in esports/gaming/content creation?
It has become more progressive, the world is opening up and accepting the fact that online is the future and people have accepted the fact that both men and women can have a future in gaming, esports, and content creation! There are so many amazing women out there to inspire our younger generations.
Do you think there are any barriers to entry for women within the esports/gaming/content creation industry at the moment?
Women face the same barriers every day within many industries two of the biggest barriers I would have to say are sexualizing and stereotyping women (i.e. girls can’t play games, they aren’t as good as guys).
For many women, this can be a very unsettling or even scary experience!
Who is a woman within this industry who inspires you?
Right now, I am inspired by all the women within the WomANZ community – every day they continue to support and encourage each other to be the best version of themselves that they can be.
What do you like about the WomANZ community and what does it mean to you?
What do I like…? More like what do I LOVE! I love the fact that each person is not scared to be themselves, I love connecting with so many like-minded women that without WomANZ I never would have had the privilege of meeting!
WomANZ isn’t another online community it is a safe place for women interested in gaming, esports and content creation to connect!
What are you excited about about being a Geo-Organiser for WomANZ?
I am sooo excited to create unforgettable meetups and events for my QLD crew! Building friendships and connections that will last a lifetime and inspire others within the industry!
