WomANZ 29 June Statement

In September 2018 a WomANZ member came to us with allegations of sexual harassment by another member. This incident was investigated to the best of our ability and mediation was attempted. We put out two statements addressing the issues and concerns and revised our community guidelines.

More recently, we attempted to reach out to another possible victim (June 2019) and offered third party mediation but our attempts to discuss this were rejected. Since then, no other members have come forward.

New information has recently been shared publicly on social media of which we had no previous knowledge. While we have no way of verifying the information shared, in order to respond to ongoing community concerns, we have removed this member from the WomANZ community, including the private Discord server.

As a community we will always do our best to support our members; we will always carefully and deliberately respond based on the fullest information available to us. We do however encourage everyone to be mindful of trial by social media. The information shared in such campaigns may not be accurate and truthful, or represent the full context. They can have legal consequences while also taking a toll on the mental health of those involved.

We are exploring ways that we can be more transparent in these situations while protecting the privacy of those involved. We take the privacy of our community very seriously however we don’t believe sharing the experiences of others without their consent results in positive transparency. Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit, educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in depression and bipolar disorder.

ReachOut is a youth mental health service providing practical tools, forums and information in a safe and anonymous online environment.

New Zealand:

The Lowdown is a website to help young New Zealanders recognise and understand depression or anxiety.

SPARX is an interactive self-help online tool that teaches young people skills to help combat depression and anxiety.

Aunty Dee is a free online tool for anyone who needs some help working through a problem. It doesn’t matter what the problem is, you can use Aunty Dee to help you work it through.

Like Minds, Like Mine is a national anti-stigma campaign. The aim of this programme is to increase social inclusion and to reduce stigma and discrimination towards people with experience of mental illness.

International:

PatchGamings goal is to create an environment which provides an outlet for all its members to express themselves, be accepted, and reduce stigma in mental health. We do this with a focus on games that people can play together, and to connect gamers with like-minded individuals, whom they can talk, play, and relate with in a place that encourages positivity and acceptance.

CheckPoint is a charity that provides mental health resources for gamers and the gaming community.
